Our Story
This is Titan. A man’s best friend. My best friend. In January 2011 I was an 18 year-old soldier attending flight training at Fort Rucker. I was not well received by my peers due to my age and found myself at home most weekends because I couldn’t socialize with others. One day I decided to change that and went to SOS in Enterprise. I had looked at their website and saw this little puppy they had named “Shep”. I showed up and asked to see him and they were unsure of what dog I was referring too. We walked to the back where the kennels were and they took me to see a full-grown dog. I told them it was not what I was looking for. I was shown some other dogs but I really wanted this one. I was feeling dejected.I started to leave and was walking past this unassuming kennel which I thought was empty. It had a dog house in it and as I walked past it, this little face appeared. I froze. It was the dog I had come to see. I knelt down to the fence and he immediately ran up to me and licking my hands. I looked at the employee and said, this is the one. I went into the office to wait for the paperwork and they brought him to me. He jumped in my lap and immediately went to sleep. This started a bond that I have not felt since with an animal. For the next 15 months or so, we were inseparable. Wherever I went, so did he. I had wanted to take him to the dog park when I got him but was told he was too young. One Saturday in April of 2012, I decided to try my luck again with him. Titan had never really been around other dogs at this point. We arrived at the park and it was pretty full. I turned him out and he just started exploring, a little stand-offish. He found a ball, a mud puddle and that was it. This young black lab shows up to try and play with him. They get into a little tiff with Titan coming out on top. I run over to break it up at the same time the owner of the lab shows up to do the same. I didn’t know it then but the woman who showed up to get her lab would be my wife one day.For the next 4 months She, Myself, Titan, and Aramis (the lab who we still have) forged a new relationship that became the foundation for everything I have. This dog opened up opportunities for me and became so much more than just a dog. He was there for the marriage to my wife, and the birth of my children, he traveled across the world with me to Korea and back. He was everything to me.In 2016, at the young age of 7, Titan developed a condition that required him to be put down. It was the hardest thing I have ever had to do in my life. I have never wept like I did that day. I held him as the life escaped from him and grieved like I had lost a child. It is not something I have ever recovered from. Some people might think he was just a dog, but to me, he was so much more.Since that fateful day, I have been trying and trying to find a way to honor his contribution to my life and the life of my family. That is why I chose the name Titan’s Legacy. This is his legacy, one of hope and healing for dogs like him. Perhaps one of the animals we rescue in his name could have the same effect for another person. All of this is the foundation for the what and why we do what we do. It gives us our purpose. I hope it inspires you to give a shelter dog, cat, or any animal in need a chance to change your life as well as theirs. Thank you.
